Person Charged In Crash Involving Cocke County Ambulance
More information has been released regarding an accident early Saturday morning on Interstate 40 that involved a Cocke County ambulance and resulted in the deaths of two people. Knoxville police say that 76 year old Lee Boone of Virginia was traveling eastbound near Mile Marker 401 when his vehicle was struck from behind by another vehicle. Boone’s vehicle wound up in a lane of travel, the woman driving the second car was ejected from that car when it rolled over all three lanes and then landed in the median. That woman was rushed to the UT Medical Center.
A third vehicle driven by 45 year old Juan Carlos Herrera Gomez of Knoxville pulled up to the scene and was going to help Lee Boone in the first vehicle, when a Priority Ambulance heading back to Cocke County could not stop in time and collided with Gomez’ vehicle. Both Gomez and Boone were killed. There were no patients in the ambulance and the driver and passenger suffered minor injuries.
The woman that was driving the second vehicle and caused the original accident has now been charged with DUI. Her identity has not yet been released.
