Retired WSCC Professor Receives Award
A Walters State Community College faculty member that recently retired has now been honored. Malcolm McAvoy, former associate professor of speech, received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Tennessee Communication Association. McAvoy’s teaching career spanned 52 years, and he came to Walters State in 1971 just one year after the college opened. McAvoy started the first Walters State Debate Team, which in 1971 won the first trophy in college history. The Debate Team has also won a national championship and is regarded as one of the most competitive in the state. Former student, Robert Pratt II, now dean of the Division of Humanities at Walters State presented McAvoy with the lifetime achievement award.
