Shoplifting Attempt Lands Man In Jail
A man is in jail after being arrested Saturday night for attempting to shoplift from Wal-Mart in Newport, a place he had been trespassed from before…for shoplifting. Police say they received a call Saturday night around 8:30pm after loss prevention at Wal-Mart spotted 39 year old Michael McAfee attempting to find an exit to push a cart full of unpaid for merchandise out of the store without being seen. McAfee left the cart just inside the garden entrance and then walked out. He then attempted to walk back in to retrieve the cart containing over $700 worth of goods. That was when he was spotted by police and took off running. McAfee was able to get to the woods on the north side of Wal-Mart, but fell and was caught by a police officer after a brief struggle. McAfee was also found to e in possession of both heroin and meth. McAfee was also found to be wanted in Hamblen County. Loss prevention at Wal-Mart told police that they have records showing over the past several years, McAfee is responsible for shoplifting losses of over $8,000.
