Tennessee Vols- College World Series Champs!
Say hello to the University of Tennessee Volunteers…College World Series champions. The Vols used great pitching from Zander Siecrest and some great infield defense, especially from first baseman Blake Burke to take a 3-1 lead against Texas A&M Monday night into the seventh when Christian Moore and Blake Burke combines for a great play to squelch a Texas A&M threat. The Vols would double their run tally in the bottom of the seventh mainly due to a two run homer by Most Outstanding Player, Dylan Dreiling.
The lead would be 6-1 going into the eighth. That’s when things got interesting. Two wild pitches in a row by Dylan Loy led to two runs for the Aggies who cut the Vols lead to half at 6-3. Two wild pitches and a balk by Vols pitcher Aaron Combs helped The Aggies get within one run, but Combs would strike out Texas A&M’s Ted Burton to wrap up Tennessee’s very first baseball championship.
The win was Tennessee’s 60th of the season. The last team to win 60 games and a national championship was Wichita State 35 years ago in 1989. Tennessee also becomes the first overall number one seed to win the title since Miami in 1999. This was the first time since 1951 that Tennessee had made it to the College World Series final.
A parade is planned in Knoxville today, 6/25. The parade will start at the Gay Street bridge downtown and continue to Wall Street. A celebration will follow afterwards in Market Square.
