Two Arrested On Drug Charges

Two arrested Monday afternoon in Newport on drug charges. A Newport patrol officer was patrolling through the parking lot of Hometown Laundry on Cope Blvd and spotted a vehicle with tags that expired in 2021. A man was asleep in the vehicle and was identified as 56 year old Laythaniel Haney who was wanted in Cocke County. A search of his vehicle yielded 3 grams of heroin found in the glovebox.

While on the scene, officers came across 51 year old Karen Hayes who was also wanted in Cocke County. She was found to have methamphetamine in her possession. Both individuals were also in possession of pipes that had recently been used to smoke illegal narcotics. Haney faces a charge of possession on schedule I for heroin. Hayes is charged with manufacture, sale or delivery of schedule II for the meth. Both were taken into custody.
