U. S. Poet Laureate Ada Limon Coming To GSMNP
U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limon is coming to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Limons visit is part of her signature project “You are Here: Poetry in Parks.” The project is a partnership between the National Park Service, Library of Congress and the Poetry Society of America that features site-specific poetry installations in some of the nation’s national parks. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of seven she is visiting this year. Her visit to the Smokies is scheduled for July 20 and will be at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center near Cherokee, NC. At each of her stops, a picnic table that has been transformed into a work of public art in unveiled. Each table is inscribed with a historic American poem that relates to that particular park. The poets laureat’s appearance and the unveiling of the special picnic table will be relocated to the Appalachian Highland Science Learning Center, at Purchase Knob which is located in the park near Cataloochee.
