Vehicle Stolen Out Of NC, Man Charged

On Wednesday, Newport Officer Lindsey Laughter was dispatched to an area on Old Cosby Road in reference to a male rolling around on the ground behind a maroon Jeep Wagoneer. The Jeep was unoccupied, with the front doors open. The vehicle was determined to be stolen out of NC. The male was located nearby and identified as Destin Potter. Mr. Potter was profusely sweating, had uncontrollable body movements, constricted pupils, and appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. Potter stated that he has used a variety of substances including opiates, clear methamphetamine, Adderall and alcoholic beverages. He stated that he had been in the jeep as a passenger, and that his friend, Mehki Montgomery had been driving the vehicle. Potter also mentioned an Ethan subject and tan skinned female being in the car at some point. The officer spoke with 2 witnesses who stated another male was at the scene, but left prior to the officer’s arrival. The officer did obtain security footage from the scene, and Mr Potter is seen on video in possession and operating the stolen vehicle. Mr Potter was transported to the Cocke County Jail Annex and charged with theft over $60,000
