Walgreens’ Victim Of Money Scam
Newport police are trying to find out who the woman is that swindled Walgreen’s in Newport out of nearly $2,000. Walgreen’s management told police that around 7:30 pm Wednesday evening, a Hispanic female came in to wire money via Western Union. The female handed the cashier $2700 in cash, which the cashier counted. However, the unknown Hispanic female took the cash ack momentarily appearing to fold it before giving it back. The cashier at that time did not recount it and stuck it in the register. Later the store found that they were short $1800. Walgreen’s management learned that Western Union showed the money transaction was sent to North Carolina and then sent back to Tennessee. According to Western Union, the money was picked up at Walmart in Newport about 20 minutes after the transaction took place at Walgreens. The name the suspect used to wire the money to North Carolina was Maya Ava and she had a contact number from the 525 area code which is not a legitimate area code in the united States.
