Weigel’s Victim Of Scammers
A business in Newport has been hit by scammers. According to police, around 4:15 am Tuesday morning, 2 black males and a black female in a white Nissan SUV came into Weigel’s on Cosby Hwy at exit 435. The three attempted to purchase a total of 9 gift cards. With each purchase, they told the cashier their method of payment would ring up declined if ran by debit, so to run the payments as cash/credit. The transactions for all nine gift cards went through. However, after the three had left the store with the gift cards, the transactions were declined.
About 10 minutes after the suspects left the store, a number with a 404 area code, which is Atlanta, called Weigel’s. A man claiming to be from Intercom Fraud wanted to make the store aware they had just been scammed. The total value of the scam was just over $4,500. Investigators are reviewing video of the suspects in an attempt to identify them.
