Woman Struck By Vehicle On Cosby Hwy

A Newport woman had to be transported to the hospital in Knoxville with serious injuries after being struck by a car on Cosby Hwy Friday. Zachary Amick told police that he was driving northbound on Cosby Hwy shortly after 11pm Friday and a woman was in the roadway that he did not see, and he struck her with his Nissan Pathfinder. Amick says with the rain and it being dark, he did not see the woman…58 year old Dawna Lopez…until it was too late. He stated she appeared to be trying to cross the highway from east to west. Amick had no signs of impairment and stopped his vehicle just over 100 feet from where Lopez was struck. Police say there was damage to the left side of the Pathfinder’s hood where Lopez’s body impacted with the vehicle. Dawna Lopez was transported to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville…her condition is not known. At this time, there are no charges being filed against the driver.
