Newport City Council Meets…Rezones Three Properties
The Newport City Council met last night and rezoning was one of the main topics of discussion. In fact, the city council approved the rezoning of three properties. First was 226 Jaybird Street from residential to commercial. Second the council approved the rezoning of the Woodland Park area from residential to become a part of the Newport City Park, since the two properties are adjacent. Third, the council approved of the rezoning of properties on West Main Street from industrial to commercial, so that area can be developed commercially.
After a long discussion the council approved a lease purchase agreement with the company Wu Holdings about the lease of a parking lot downtown. The general feeling is this lease purchase agreement is the catalyst for a multi-million development in downtown Newport.
The council also last night approved the application for a grant with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation…or TDEC…that grant will go to a project to help improve the city’s sewer system. The council also approved the purchase of a scissor lift for the recreation department and gave the go-ahead for a sidewalk construction project at Main Street and Mims Avenue. That project will be funded completely by the state of Tennessee.
And…the council decided to cancel the November meeting. The meeting next month would have fallen on November 8th…and of course that is election day. The next council meeting will be on Tuesday, December 13.
