729 Area Code Rollout Postponed

If you have picked up your phone and made a local call using just the seven digit number and it went through, there is a reason for that. Hurricane Helene has now affected the 729 area code rollout. The new area code was to go into effect on Wednesday, March 5. Because of Helene, the official launch of the new 729 area code has been postponed till Septmber 5. The 729 area code is an overlay of the 4523 area code. That means, if you have a 423 number, that will not change. New numbers assigned will be given the 729 area code.

While you have been given a reprieve from the 10 digit dialing (area code + number), that is just temporary. 10 digit dialing will officially go into effect on August 5.
