10 Digit Dialing Begins This Week

Get ready to push more buttons when you call a phone number. Starting on Wednesday, February 5, all local calls made within the 423 area code must be dialed using 10 digits (area code + the 7-digit telephone number). The reason for that is a new area code. The 729 area code will officially be active on Wednesday. The 729 area code will overlay the 423 area code. That means if you have a current 423 area code number, your phone number does not change. New phone numbers assigned in the current 423 area code will be given the 729 area code instead.

The 729 area code was added because the 423 area code was running out of numbers.
