Man Attempts To Elude Police Now Facing Charges
A man who attempted to elude police now faces charges. The pursuit happened Saturday when a Cocke County deputy observed what appeared to be a drug deal in the middle of Bullard Drive in Newport. The vehicle involved then led police on a chase that went down New Cave Church Road onto Cosby Hwy, through the Wal-Mart parking lot before getting onto the Cosby Cut-Off Road. The driver of the vehicle being pursued ran the red light at Cosby Hwy and Early Road. The driver then drove down Cosby Cut-Off Road at speeds up to 75 mph before running into a guardrail and crashing.
The driver was identified as 52 year old William Carter of Newport, whose license was suspended. Carter had thrown a bag from his vehicle which contained over 8 grams of meth, 1.72 grams of cocaine and Oxycodone pills. Carter was also found to be wanted in Hamblen County. He now faces a long list of charges in Cocke County including possession of meth with intent to sell, tampering with evidence, reckless driving and evading arrest.
