BBB Warns Of QR Code Scam

Well, QR codes are everywhere these days. They can be found at the gas pump, grocery stores, restaurants are using them for menus….the QR code looks like a bar code but instead is square and looks like something you would see in a psychiatrist’s office. The Better Business Bureau is now warning about a new scam involving QR codes. The BBB, says that scammers are now replacing the quick response codes with fake ones that could take you to a phishing site. The site could then prompt you to enter in your personal information or payment information in an effort to get to your money. So they suggest you use caution when accessing QR codes. One other thing the better business bureau suggests is to download a QR scanning app instead of using your cell phone’s camera. Most of those apps add a level of security when scanning those codes. So far there have been no reports of victims of this scam in our area, but Tony Binkley, the president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Greater East Tennessee says it’s just a matter of time.
