Attorney General Blasts Possible Change In Approval Process

Tennessee’s Attorney General Herbert Slatery came out this week blasting a proposal that he says would politicize the office that he holds. There is a proposed constitutional amendment being floated around that would change the way the state Attorney General would be confirmed. Currently the state supreme court approves the attorney general…that amendment which would have to be approved by 2.3rds of the state legislature to be placed on the ballot next year would bring legislators into the fold of approving the Attorney General. The amendment would require that after the approval of the supreme court, the attorney general would have to be confirmed by state lawmakers. Slatery warned that this could allow companies that are under investigation could lobby state lawmakers influencing the confirmation process. Slatery says the supreme court would then be put in the position of approving someone that would meet lawmakers approval…politicizing the office of the attorney general.
