New License Plates Still Under Review

The discussion about Tennessee’s new license plates is continuing. At the heart of the matter is the inability of license plate recognition cameras to read the new license plates after dark. The plates either show up blurry or cannot be read at all. The commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Revenue appeared before the House Ways and Mean’s committee earlier this week. The commissioner said there are a variety of LPR vendors with a range of different cameras that the Department of Revenue is working with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security to evaluate the situation…Tennessee’s new dark blue tags have a different reflectivity than previous plates and attempts are being made to adjust the software according to camera manufacturer Flock Safety. A Department of Revenue spokesperson said the state is not considering a change back to a new white license plate at this time. So far over 725,000 of the new blue plates have been distributed across Tennessee.
