Escaped Inmate Arrested
Newport police arrested an escaped inmate Sunday morning. Officer Jordan Douglas stated he saw a male subject running behind the Newport police department toward the Riverwalk. The man continued to look back at the officer, so officer Douglas made contact. The man was 30 year old Brandon Hurst who had been on the jail roster with the last couple of days. Hurst stated he had been released from jail but was still in the jail’s JCAP program. Hurst was detained while Officer Douglas checked with the Cocke County jail. Jail staff advised that Hurst was currently in custody and that he was supposed to be at a church service at Eastern Plaza as part of the JCAP program but had run away while there. Hurst was taken back to jail and is now charged with escape.
