TN Firearms Assoc. Planning Massive Ad Campaign

Over the next few weeks, Tennessee residents are apt to see an increase of ads on television pertaining to guns. The Tennessee Firearms Association is behind the increase in gun related ads. The Association is worried about an upcoming special legislative session where Governor Bill Lee is hopeful to enact some sort of legislation to control gun violence in the state. What the Tennessee Firearms Association and other gun advocates fear is a so called “red flag law”. Red Flag laws allow people to petition the court for a temporary confiscation of an individual’s firearms if that person is deemed to be a risk to themself or to others. Democrats favor red flag laws saying that they would curb gun violence by getting guns out of the hands of unstable individuals. However many republicans oppose red flag laws because they are ripe for abuse…and could allow guns to be taken from law-abiding citizens. Many republicans in the state of Tennessee say that a red flag law is a non-starter and will never pass. However executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association, John Harris says he is concerned that there might be enough republicans that would caucus with democrats to “push something through to make the governor save face in his agenda,”. The Tennessee Firearms Association has raised $100,000 to pay for a three week television ad campaign before the August 21st special session.
