CICADAS ARE COMING!

Get ready to get dive bombed. That buzzing sound you will soon hear in Cocke County and the Smoky Mountains is known as the brood X cicada. Billions of the big eyed winged critters are set to emerge from underground in the coming days and weeks from Indiana to New Jersey…with a heavy concentration right here in east Tennessee. Experts say this is the largest brood in both density and geographical area…they appear only once every 17 years. Though the cicadas can live for more than a decade below ground…the brood will only live between 4 & 6 weeks after emerging as they molt, mate and reproduce. If you want to keep track of the cicadas, there is actually an app for that…it’s called Cicada Safari and has over 50,000 downloads…by the way, the cicadas will not hurt you, they don’t sting, they don’t bite….they just might run into you on their search for love…
