Newport Man Arrested for Assault

A Newport man is in the Cocke County Jail this morning for his actions on Saturday. Hallie Bree Burns and the suspect Matthew Mallot were at a residence on Spartan Way Saturday evening. The two had been involved in a confrontation in Mallot’s car earlier in the day. Around 1:30 Sunday morning Mallot asked Burns to come out on a porch to talk…at which point he grabbed her by the shoulders and assaulted her with his fists. When Burns screamed, Mallott got in his car and drove off. Because Hallie Burn’s cell phone was in that car, police were able to trace the car to the Time Out Travel Center where police took Mallott into custody. Upon searching his vehicle, Cocke County deputies found 3.7 grams of cocaine and a set of brass knuckles in that car. Mallot is now in jail on charges of domestic assault, drug possession and possession of prohibited weapons.
