CCSO Warns Of New Scams
The Cocke County Sheriff’s office is warning about a new scam. With this one, someone is calling individuals on their cell phones claiming to be with fraud departments at credit unions. The scammer then tells the the customer they need to close their account and open a new account on the phone. That should be a red flag immediately. Under most circumstances to close an account, you need to come into banking facility in person, as well as to open a new account. The sheriff’s office warns agasinst doing any kind of banking over the phone. If you get a call like this, simply hang up. If you have any questions about fraud, call your financial institution personally.
There has also been another scam surface in this area. According to the Cocke County Sheriff’s office, this one comes via mail or e-mail. In this one, the potential victim is sent a traffic ticket from Davidson County, which is metro Nashville. The ticket looks official and contains a QR code for you to scan. The sheriff’s office warns anyone who gets one of these communications to NOT scan the QR code as it is a scam.
