CRT Banned in Tennessee Schools
During their legislative session in Nashville yesterday, the Tennessee General Assembly has put the brakes on teaching Critical Race Theory in Tennessee’s public schools. Republicans in the House chamber introduced provisions that ban teachers of public schools in Tennessee from teaching that one race bears responsibility for the past actions against another race…and it also would ban teaching that the United States is fundamentally racist or that a person is inherently privileged or oppressive due to their race.
Critical Race Theory is being taught in many schools across the nation…teaching children that the United States was born as a racist nation and that racism is ingrained in its institutions and that white people benefit from that. Several states have been pushing back on this recently as Idaho’s governor has already signed and put in effect a similar law banning teaching CRT in schools and Texas is working on passing one as well.
Tennessee’s lawmakers also passed a law that would withhold funds from public schools in the state that teach students about white privilege.
