Man Arrested For Trying To Get Tobacco Into Cocke County Jail
Newport police arrested a man last week for trying to get contraband into the Cocke County jail. A Cocke County Corrections officer had found 31 year old Charles Gorrell walking around on the jail annex property. Gorrell had been trespassed from the jail annex after being arrested in January for scaling the fence and throwing contraband into the facility. Gorrell voluntarily opened his backpack and police discovered 2.5 grams of suspected meth, 3.4 grams of suspected marijuana, plus various drug paraphernalia. Newport officer Paul Weber also discovered black electrical tape and two bags of tobacco. Jail staff found four balls of tobacco wrapped in electrical tape on the jail roof and also observed the same type of electrical taped balls being thrown into the recreational yard as jail inmates were present. The balls thrown into the recreational yard contained tobacco and a lighter. Gorrell told police he had been paid $40 to get the items into the jail. Gorrell is now inside the jail himself after being charged with drug possession, criminal trespass and introduction of contraband into a penal facility.
Two females were arrested recently for the same thing…throwing balls of tobacco wrapped in electrical tape onto the jail annex roof.
