Man Assaults Pregnant Woman

A man was jailed over the weekend in Newport after assaulting a pregnant woman in the parking lot of the Newport Medical Center. A witness told police the suspect and the victim had left in a black Dodge Durango. The vehicle was located behind Newport Grammar School and a police officer witnessed the driver, 32 year old Trent Smith, strike the female passenger in the face, then try to push her out of the vehicle while it was in motion. Smith was apprehended at that time. The victim stated that she is pregnant and that is what the fight was about. The 36 year old female stated that Smith had told her he wanted to kill the inborn child and had punched her in the stomach. A witness at Newport Medical Center confirmed the account saying they observed Smith hit the woman in the abdomen as well as wrapping a hoodie around the victim’s neck in an attempt to suffocate her. Smith is now charged with Aggravated Assault and Reckless Endangerment.
