Man Tries To Evade Police Saturday
A man was injured while he was trying to evade police early Saturday morning. According to Newport police, a patrolman spotted a lack Ford Thunderbird on College Street with no headlights, when a traffic stop was attempted, the driver of the Thunderbird sped down Woodlawn and eventually got onto North Street reaching speeds of 90 mph in the city them over 100 out in the county on US 321 where the chase reached the Parrottsville city limits. 22 year old Nicholas Gibson, the driver, nearly caused three head on collisions and also threw drug paraphernalia out the window during the chase. He jumped out of the car, leaving it in drive and fled on foot. He attempted to jump down a large cliffside embankment but fell and suffered unknown injuries and was flown to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville via Lifestar. Two juveniles were also in the car with Gibson. They told police they were afraid for their lives and tried to get Gibson to stop. They were turned over to one of their parents. Gibson is charged with numerous crimes including four counts of reckless endangerment and evading.
