Newport City School Board Asks Lawmakers To Say No To voucher Plan
The Newport City School Board of Education has passed a resolution opposing Goveror Bill Lee’s school voucher plan. In that resolution, the school board points out that the Tennessee State Constitution provides for state funding of public schools and that funding is necessary to provide what is needed for students’ education. The board says that 25% of their 740 students come from economically disavantaged backgrounds and the state funding is crucial. The resolution also states vouchers and education savings accounts threaten the district’s ability to maintain its quality of education offerings by diverting those state funds.
The board then urges the Tennessee General Assembly to vote down Governor Bill Lee’s school voucher bill. All five of the board members put their names on that resolution.
