Newport Police To Enforce Parking Law
If you park on the street in downtown Newport, be aware that starting today, the Newport Police Department will begin issuing warnings for people who park left side to curb. Tennessee law states that anyone parking on a street is to park with their right tire within 18″ of the right hand curb. According to police chief Maurice Shults, parking left side to curb is illegal. When parking left side to curb, vehicles have to cross oncoming traffic to park, then cross oncoming traffic again to leave which Shults says is very dangerous. With the increased parking on downtown streets, police will now be enforcing state law regarding parking. Shults says starting May 7th, officers will begin issuing citations for parking left side to curb.
