Norfolk Southern Stands by Their Original Assessment
Norfolk Southern Railroad says they are still looking to have the Asheville to Newport run of their railroad back open by the end of January, despite the collapse of the railroad trestle over the Pigeon River on the east side of Newport. That rail line runs from Salisbury, NC to Morristown. Norfolk Southern, who owns that track, says that 21,500 feet of track was washed away by the effects of Hurricane Helene and over 50,000 feet of track was damaged. Still, the railroad says they are standing by their original estimate to have that span of railway back open in about three months.
River Road, Jimtown Road and Liberty Alley are all closed at East Broadway due to the collapse of the railroad trestle.
