Police Respond To Fight Tuesday Night
Newport police responded to a fight late Tuesday night between two men…the fight involved a firearm. Police found the firearm lying on the roadway at the site of the fight on White Oak Ave. According to witness statements, an unidentified white male around 40 years of age approached a 9 year old child and asked him if he was okay. The boy’s mother then told the man that her child was fine and the man need to just move along. That is when the white male subject pulled a Smith & Wesson 40 caliber pistol from his waistband and told the woman that he was an officer of the law and he was checking on the child. The 9 year old boy then ran into the house and told an adult male what was happening outside. That man then confronted the unsub and a fight ensued between the two men. The handgun fell to the roadway during the fight. The unsub wound up with a laceration on his right nostril and was treated on scene by EMS. He was then transported to the Cocke County jail and charges with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm while intoxicated. As of now, that man’s true identity is not known.
