Police Respond To Shots Fired
Police responded Sunday afternoon in Newport to a report of shots being fired. Three individuals stated that 40 year old Matthew Sherfield had pulled into a driveway on College Street and began blowing the horn on his vehicle. Sherfield then fired three shots into the air from a 10mm handgun. Newport police contacted Jefferson County authorities about Sherfield. He was taken into custody in Jefferson County and transported to the Cocke County line at Resthaven Cemetery. Sherfield was then questioned by Newport police about the incident and Sherfield admitted to firing three shots into the air, but no reason was given. The gun used was found to be stolen out of Jefferson county. Sherfield was then taken back into custody by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office. He is in the detention center in Dandridge Charged with Aggravated Assault and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
