Stong Winds Cause Power Outages, Water Service Interrupted For Some Sunday
After rains brought flooding to the Pigeon River last week, over the weekend a strong frontal system brought some more rain. But, the rain was not the issue. The issue was the wind. Strong winds with storms early Sunday morning brought down tree limbs onto power lines all across East Tennessee. Over 25,000 customers were without power across several counties. Newport Utilities had over 1,600 customers without power on Sunday. As of Monday morning at 6am, less than 50 customers remained without power in Cocke County.
In Sevier County, well over 1,500 customers were without power on Sunday, mainly in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge areas. As of Monday morning, less than 40 remained without power.
While Newport Utilities was working on getting power back on, much of the area between Newport and Cosby was without water. A water leak caused customers in the areas of Epley Road; Bogard Road; English Mountain; Armory Road; and Cosby Highway from Lowe’s to Wilton Springs, experienced either no water or extremely low water pressure. As of late Sunday night, crews were working on repairing the leak and getting water service restored.
