TDOT Announces More Interstate Openings
Some good news for travelers, TDOT on Wednesday announced that Interstate 26 has been reopened to traffic in the Erwin area. TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley says I-26 is now open with one lane of traffic in each direction, but there is a restriction. No wide load vehicles are allowed as nothing over 12 feet wide can come through the interstate at this time. Commercial vehicles are still being routed up I-81 North to I-77 South. Eley says TDOT crews have used 33,000 tons of rock and more than 5,000 tons of asphalt to create the new roadway. Eley made mention of how 33 days ago, parts of the interstate had been washed away, and now traffic can begin at least flowing again. Eley says that crews will now begin working on the rest of the damaged areas on I-26 to get the entire interstate back open.
