Watch Out For Trailer Thieves
The Jefferson County sheriff’s department is warning citizens about a growing trend…the theft of trailers in the area. The sheriff’s department says thefts of trailers like those used to tow lawn tractors and such are on the rise. Most of these thefts occurred on trailers that had no locking systems in place and happen within minutes. The Jefferson County sheriff’s department says there are things you can do to keep you from becoming a victim of these thefts…first they say are HITCH LOCKS which make it nearly impossible for a thief to attach their vehicle to your trailer. The lock fits into your hitch and is secured with the turn of a key.
TONGUE LOCKS allow you to include the trailer chains when securing the hitch.
COUPLER LOCKS can be used while your trailer is still hitched to your vehicle, depending on the design and prevent the thief from being able to hook up to the coupler.
TRAILER WHEEL LOCKS or CLAMPS attach on the outside of the tires. When trailer-wheel locks are in place, it’s nearly impossible to move the trailer.
The Jefferson County sheriff’s office says just be aware these thefts are happening not just in their county, but area wide.
