729 New East Tennessee Area Code

The Tennessee Public Utilities Commission has approved a new area code for East Tennessee. 729 is the new area code. According to the commission, counties within the 423-area code are expected to run out of new numbers sometime in the third quarter of 2025. They say the 729 area code will ensure residents and businesses have access to a ‘sufficient supply’ of telephone numbers to serve the growing East Tennessee area. Those with existing 423 area code numbers will e keeping those numbers. any new or requests for additional lines may be assigned with the new code when it becomes active in 2025.
