Greeneville Shooting Deemed Part Of Murder-Suicide

The TBI confirmed this afternoon that a man who committed suicide outside the Washington County Justice Center in Jonesborough Wednesday afternoon had killed a woman in Greeneville shortly before taking his own life. According to investigators, around 1pm Wednesday, Greeneville police were called about shots being fired at Midway Construction and Plumbing’s parking lot. Officers found 48 year old Melissa McMurray suffering from gunshot wounds…she was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Just a short time later a man now identified as 51 year old Richard Eugene Davenport called the Washington County Sheriff’s department saying he was outside the Justice Center in the parking lot and had a gun. When deputies approached Davenport, he shot himself. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later. The TBI described the two as acquaintances but did not disclose if they had discovered a motive of why Davenport killed McMurray in the parking lot in Greeneville.
