Spur Tunnel Crew Switching Sides
Crews are now moving to part two of the work they are doing on the tunnel on the northbound spur between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Maintenance is pretty much complete on one side, so crews are going to be moving to the other side of the northbound lanes of the tunnel. The single lane closure will switch to the other lane sometime late next week between March 1st and March 3rd. The day of the lane change, crews will need to realign a portion of the concrete barrier wall, realign the crash cushion, remove and re-establish the temporary traffic lane markings, relocate and revise traffic signs, and complete other work, so you can expect delays when that happens. The single-lane closure will continue to be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the construction period. Crews are replacing drains and lights, cleaning and sealing the tunnel interior, putting in a new lighting control system, and installing a propane-powered generator for emergency backup. The entire project is expected to be complete by June 5th.
