Woman Charged With Assault After Kicking Police Officer

Two people were arrested Sunday for sleeping under a bridge. Police were called to an area near the Five Rivers Plaza in Newport after complaints of homeless people leaving trash on private property and sleeping under the bridge on West Broadway near the Five Rivers Plaza. 47 year old Darrel Cate and 44 year old Jennifer Hall were found sleeping under that bridge. Both were intoxicated. When an officer went to take Hall into custody, she kicked the officer in the abdomen and the thigh. She had to be forcefully taken into custody and eventually placed in a restraint chair while at the Cocke County Jail. Both Cate and Hall were charged with criminal trespass and public intoxication. Hall has an addition charge of assault on a first responder.
