Sunday Night Crash Ends In DUI Arrest
Newport police responded late Sunday night to an accident on Lincoln Avenue…a car had hit a utility pole. Officers arrived at about 11:40 pm (Sunday night) and found a Chevy Impala on its side. The driver 44 year old Adam Cogdill had crawled out a window and was bleeding from the forehead. Police found that Cogdill was intoxicated and was driving at a high rate of speed down Lincoln Avenue when he struck the utility pole, snapping it off about 3 feet from the base. The pole then crashed into a chain link fence and Cogdill’s Impala rolled over onto its side. Cogdill’s license had been revoked for DUI convictions in Carter County and Cocke County. He was transported to the Newport Medical Center for his injuries, he will be charged with DUI. The owner of the fence estimated damages to be $1,000, while Newport Utilities estimated the cost to replace the power pole would be near $5,000.
