Thief Steals Money From Home Safe

A thief who broke into a home in Newport last weekend got away with quite the haul. Garry Lewis told the Cocke County sheriff’s office he and his wife traveled to Nashville last weekend. While they were out of town, his son called him and told him that someone had broken into the home on Green Leaf Rd and drawers and cabinets were scattered all of the floor of the home. Lewis says when he got home on Wednesday, he found that his safe located in the dining area of the home was open and the paper with the combination lying beside of it. Lewis told a sheriff’s department investigator that the combination is stored in the bedroom in one of the drawers of his dresser…and that was drawer was found open. Lewis stated that approximately $23,750.00 cash was stolen from that safe. He says he has no idea who would have broken into his home and committed the theft.
