Walter State Sees Higher Dual Enrollment
Walters State is seeing more high school students taking classes this fall. They call this dual enrollment, and that allows students to earn both high school and college credit by taking Walters State classes while they are still in high school. Dr. Matthew Hunter, dean of high school programs at Walters State, says fall semester enrollment includes 1,996 high school students taking dual enrollment courses. In fact, Walters State leads the Tennessee Board of Regents in the number of dual enrollment students for this semester. Hunter, who is also dean of the Newport Center for Walters State says dual enrollment courses have always been popular. Hunter says this year Walters State has added more in-school courses, which seems popular for rural and smaller high school students who may not be able to get to a campus.
The college has offered dual enrollment for over 20 years and students have a 93% pass rate. Courses transfer to both in-state and out-of-state, four-year institutions.
