Newport City Council Approves Purchase For Property To House New Police Department
The Newport City Council met last night at City Hall. The council had a large agenda last night. Part of that agenda was to approve the purchase of part of the old Rhyne property in Newport. That property will be used for the city to build a new Police Department. The city’s current police department building on Main Street in downtown Newport was severely damaged by the September 27 flood. The Newport Police department has been operating in a temporary location at the Newport Community Center.
The 8 acre tract of land will also house a new Animal Control facility. The land purchase will also allow the city to expand Main Street to Cope Blvd.
Also during the City Council meeting last night, the council voted to close an alley on Holley Street. That will add property to a new City Park that is currently under construction.
The council also approved a grant for the Farmer’s Market. They also voted to move the Farmer’s Market this year. The Farmer’s Market will move downtown to City Hall for this year.
