Lady Vols Out, Baseball Vols Still Alive
Good news and bad news for UT Sports on Monday. First the bad news. The Tennessee Lady Vols quest for a national title came crashing to an end in Oklahoma City Monday afternoon. Less then 24 hours after a controversial call by the umpiring crew nearly cost Tennessee the game on Sunday, the umpires were back in Tennessee’s crosshairs Monday afternoon. Lady Vols head coach Karen Weekly began hearing from her players how they were getting squeezed in the strike zone and she began letting the home plate umpire know about it. Weekly began arguing balls and strikes. Hitting coach Craig Snider then also began chiming in. Snider was then ejected from the game. The Lady Vols were shut out by Texas Monday by the score of 2-0. They are now eliminated.
While the national title quest has ended for the Lady Vols, the Tennessee Vols baseball team will continue the defense of their national title after dismissing Wake Forest Monday night. Manny Marin’s three run blast in the fourth broke the game open and put the Vols up 6-2. Andrew Fischer would add a 2 run shot and the Vols led 8-2 after 4. Tennessee would add a couple more runs in the seventh and Tennessee sends Wake Forest back home with a 11-5 win. Tennessee now heads to the Super Regional against Arkansas in Fayetteville. Game times should be released later on Tuesday.
