Bill In General Assembly Would Create Cold Case Division Within TBI
A bill being considered in the Tennessee state legislature would help the state solve crimes that have been unsolved for years. House bill 2606 was introduced in the house on Tuesday and would create a Cold Case Division within the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The legislation states that the Cold Case Division of the TBI would be divided into three geographic regions, each staffed by a regional director and no fewer than five cold case detectives. Local law enforcement agencies would be required to submit unsolved missing person or homicide cases to the cold case division once those cases have been unsolved for a period of 10 years.
The TBI says at this time, there are nearly 480 cold cases in the state and only one full-time agent assigned to investigate. The bill to create the Cold Case Division within the TBI has already passed in the Senate Judiciary Committee and now heads to the Senate Finance, Ways, and Means Committee.
