Flash Flooding In Pittman Center Tuesday Night
Storms rolled through east Tennessee last night and in some cases dropping a substantial amount of rain in a short time. Such was the case that prompted over a dozen people to have to be rescued Tuesday night after flash flooding struck the Greenbrier Campground in the national park. Just before 11:00 last night., the Gatlinburg Fire Department got the call that 14 people were trapped at the campground due to flooding. According to some first responders, the water was as high as a picnic table. Cars were being washed up against trees.
Flash Flooding near Pittman Center Road prompted Sevier County Emergency Management Agency to warn folks near the Greenbrier Island area to seek high ground immediately. A temporary shelter was opened at the Pittman Center Elementary School for families affected by the flooding. By 2am the waters were receding again , but citizens in low lying areas were warned to use caution. Multiple fire departments and rescue squads responded to help with the evacuations.
