TDOT Pollinator Habitat Program’s Project Milkweed Supplying FREE Seeds
Remember the Monarch Butterflies? You don’t see as many today as in years’ past and experts say that is because their main food source has been depleted. According to the Tennessee Pollinator Project, milkweed is a major food source for Monarch Butterflies, but the milkweed has seen a decline of 90%in the past 30 years. That had led to a nearly identical decline of the Monarch Butterfly. So, the state of Tennessee is taking action. The TDOT Pollinator Habitat Program’s Project Milkweed is supplying free seeds to those who would like to help. Red milkweed is best for small gardens, and Common Milkweed is best planted for large areas. The seeds are free and you can get them by going to the website https://tnpollinators.org/milkweed/. Experts say the best time to plan the milkweed seeds is before Oct. 15 to ensure successful germination.
