A burned out brake light led to one person going to jail for drug possession. Thursday night in Newport, a Toyota Avalon was spotted by police pulling out of the Best Western parking lot on Cosby Hwy…that Toyota was missing its registration plate. Kelly Bowers of North Carolina told police that he was in the process of getting the vehicle registered as well as getting his license back as it had been suspended out of Franklin, North Carolina due to a DUI. Bowers agreed to a search of the vehicle and the passenger, 60 year old Anita Rodriguez gave the okay for her belongings to be looked at as well. During the search, in the vehicles glove box was a pink zippered pouch with two small plastic baggies containing 3.8 grams of methamphetamine. Both Bowers and Rodriguez denied ownership of the narcotics, but because they were within direct reach of Ms. Rodriguez, she was charged with possession of schedule II.
