Cocke County Deputy Assaulted

A Cosby man has been arrested for assaulting a police officer. The situation began when a Cocke County Deputy spotted 25 year old Tommy Leonard walking northbound on Hwy 73 Tuesday morning with heavy traffic present. Leonard had an active warrant for probation violation so deputy Randy Forbes stopped to apprehend him. Leonard resisted and had to be handcuffed from the front. A search of his pockets revealed a bottle filled with assorted pills. Upon arrival at the jail, while getting out of the patrol car, Leonard asked deputy Forbes for a cigarette which Forbes did not have one. Leonard then cussed Forbes and threw a punch at him. Forbes was able to get Leonard down to the ground and with the help of a corrections officer was able to restrain him. Both Forbes and the corrections officer suffered minor injuries…the corrections officer was taken to the Newport Medical Center for treatment. Tommy Leonard has been charged with possession of legend drugs, resisting arrest and assault.
