Failure To Stop At Stop Sign Leads To Drug Charge
A man who failed to stop at a stop sign now has a drug charge. Newport police observed 67 year old Jerry Belcher fail to stop at the stop sign at Mountainview St. and White Oak Ave. Belcher then appeared to accelerate on White Oak Ave. before running another stop sign at East Broadway. With police in pursuit, Belcher turned onto Wall St. and finally came to a stop in a gravel lot behind Pro Auto Body. Belcher was found to be in possession of .7 grams of heroin. He told police he had traded meth for the heroin in the 300 block of Jefferson Avenue. Belcher faces a charge of possession of schedule I. A female passenger was released.
