Officers Pursue Speeding Vehicle
ON THURSDAY, NEWPORT OFFICER WILLIAM GARBER OBSERVED A SILVER VEHICLE TRAVELING ON WEST BROADWAY AT 78 MPH IN A 40 MPH SPEED ZONE. OFFICER GARBER INITIATED LIGHT AND SIRENS IN PURSUIT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED THROUGH DOWNTOWN AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND TURNED SOUTH ON WOODLAWN AVENUE WHERE OFFICER LOST SIGHT OF THE VEHICLE. OFFICER SILVERS LOCATED THE VEHICLE ON MINERAL STREET STILL TRAVELING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, NOT STOPPING FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS OR STOP SIGNS. OFFICERS PURSUED THE VEHICLE UNTIL HE FAILED TO STOP AT THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTH COSBY HIGHWAY AND WILTON SPRINGS ROAD AND WENT THROUGH THE PARKING LOT OF RURAL MEDICAL SERVICES. ONCE HIS VEHICLE WAS DISABLED, HE ATTEMPTED TO FLEE ON FOOT. OFFICER SILVERS WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE DRIVER, JOHN HELVEY INTO CUSTODY AT THAT TIME WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
